Overwidth Load — Do I Need a Permit for My Mini Excavator?

I need to haul my mini excavator which is about 8’6″ wide with the tracks on — slightly over the standard 8’6″ limit in some states. Do I need an overwidth permit for every trip? How do you guys handle multi-state hauls without getting bogged down in paperwork? Also, what about flags, lights, and escort vehicle requirements? I’m trying to stay compliant and avoid fines. Any tips on navigating DOT regulations for occasional haulers like me? Thanks!
