Dealing with Unexpected Underground Utilities — Any Advice?

We hit an unmarked underground utility line during excavation yesterday — nothing dangerous, just an old irrigation line, but it shut us down for a few hours while we figured things out. How do you handle unexpected obstacles like this? I always call 811, but sometimes things slip through. Any tips on identifying potential hazards before you dig? Also, how do you recover lost time and keep the project on schedule? Would appreciate any strategies from experienced guys who’ve been through this.
