Step 1 — Hydraulic fluid level
Low fluid is the most common cause of reduced performance. Check the sight glass before anything else.
Step 2 — Hydraulic filter
A clogged filter restricts flow before it reaches the cylinders. If you can’t remember the last change — change it now.
Step 3 — Operating pressure
Most compact excavators run 18-20 MPa. If you have a gauge port — check it. Pressure below spec points to pump or relief valve.
Step 4 — Cylinder rod condition
Look at the hydraulic cylinder rods. Any oil film streaking down the rod means seal wear. Seals cause internal bypass — pressure builds but force transfers poorly.
Step 5 — Engine RPM under load
If the engine is hunting or dropping RPM under digging load — fuel system issue or governor problem. Digging force comes from hydraulic pressure which comes from engine RPM.
Step 6 — Pump condition
Last on the list because it’s least common but most expensive. Internal pump wear causes pressure loss across all functions simultaneously.
Most cases are solved at step 1 or 2. The expensive answers are at the bottom of the list for a reason.
