When choosing mini or compact excavators, zero tail swing models are frequently asked about.

The core difference lies in the rotating structure of the upper body.

Simply put: with zero tail swing, the upper structure stays within the width of the tracks during full 360° rotation.

For conventional compact excavators, the counterweight extends beyond the tracks while slewing.

Conventional compact excavators

Conventional machines rely on an outward-extending counterweight for balance.

✅ Pros: Longer counterweight lever arm, better lifting capacity and stability at the same tonnage.

Great for heavy digging and pipe hoisting; simpler structure and lower purchase cost.

❌ Cons: Extra space must be reserved for tail swing.

Risk of hitting walls or pipelines when working close to buildings or in narrow alleys, requiring frequent repositioning.

👉 Best for open job sites, farms and outdoor projects with large earthmoving volumes.

Optimized counterweight layout keeps the slewing profile inside the track width.

✅ Pros: Can work flush against walls.

No collision risk during 360° rotation. Ideal for municipal maintenance, indoor demolition, yard renovation, basements and confined spaces; less repositioning improves efficiency.

❌ Cons: Limited space for counterweight, slightly weaker lifting and heavy-load stability for the same weight class.

Compact engine compartment leaves less room for maintenance, usually higher purchase price.

👉 Best for municipal repair, indoor demolition, yards, basements and narrow restricted work areas.

Selection guide

    • Open site, frequent heavy excavation or hoisting: choose conventional compact excavator.
    • Tight workspace, working close to walls or structures: choose zero tail swing model.

I’ve been looking into the Shanding SD18 mini excavator. Are the controls hydraulic joysticks?

I need an excavator for working through brush — which size would you recommend for that?
