Enclosed cab vs. open canopy on a mini excavator, worth the upgrade?

This comes up constantly with buyers, so here’s the honest short version we walk people through. No universal answer, it depends on your climate and your hours.

Go enclosed cab if:
You work year-round in real weather. An AC and heater cab keeps you productive on days an open machine would be miserable. If you run long shifts or work in dusty, debris-heavy conditions, a sealed cab cuts fatigue and keeps dust out of your face. A comfortable operator makes fewer mistakes and lasts longer.

Go open canopy if:
You’re a mild-climate or seasonal user. If you mostly work spring through fall in decent weather, a canopy may be all you ever need, and you pocket the savings. Some operators also just prefer the better all-around visibility, airflow, and quick in and out for jobs with lots of hopping on and off.

Worth remembering:
A cab adds a little weight and height, so check it against your trailer and access. And you usually can’t easily add a full cab later, so think about your next few years of work, not just today.
