After working around compact equipment for a while, I started noticing that some attachments get used almost daily… while others mostly collect dust after the “new toy” phase wears off.
Here’s my personal ranking based on real-world usefulness for small construction, landscaping, farm work, and property maintenance:
S-Tier (Use Constantly)
- Hydraulic Thumb Clip
Probably the most useful add-on overall. Picking up rocks, logs, debris, concrete, brush, pipe — makes the machine WAY more versatile.
2. Trenching Bucket
If you do utility lines, irrigation, drainage, electrical, or water work, this attachment pays for itself fast.
3. Grading Bucket
Massive time saver for landscaping, leveling gravel, finishing work, and cleanup.
A-Tier (Very Useful)
4. Auger
Great for fencing, tree planting, deck footings, and farm projects. Huge labor saver.
5. Hydraulic Breaker/Hammer
Incredible when you need it. Concrete, asphalt, rock — nothing beats it. But for most people it’s not daily-use equipment.
6. Ripper Tooth
Underrated attachment for hard ground, roots, frozen dirt, and rocky soil.
B-Tier (Situational)
7. Grapple/Rake
Excellent for land clearing and brush cleanup, especially on farms or wooded property.
8. Tilt Bucket
Super useful for finish grading and slopes, but expensive compared to standard buckets.
C-Tier (Cool… But Less Used)
9. Screening Bucket
Useful for specialized work, but most smaller operators don’t use it enough to justify the cost.
10. Compactor Plate
Good for trench compaction and paving prep, but many crews still use separate compactors instead.
Honestly, I think the hydraulic thumb clip completely changes what a mini excavator can do. It turns it from “just a digger” into a true material-handling machine.
