We talk to a lot of first-time buyers who open a spec sheet, see thirty numbers, and freeze. Here’s the honest short list. Nail these six and you can mostly ignore the rest, no matter whose machine you’re looking at.
1. Operating weight. The foundation number. It tells you the machine’s class, its stability and digging muscle, and just as importantly, whether you can transport it. Check it against your trailer rating and your gate width before anything else.
2. Digging depth. How deep it actually reaches in one setup. The number people most often wish they’d checked. Match it honestly to your real jobs, most residential and light commercial work lives within what a 1 to 2 ton machine reaches.
3. Bucket breakout force. The muscle at the bucket, how hard it pries material loose. The difference between cutting into hard-packed ground and roots versus skating across the top. This is the number you feel most on tough digs.
4. Hydraulic flow (GPM or L/min). This is what runs your attachments. If you plan to use an auger, breaker, or grapple, flow matters more than horsepower. Check it against any attachment you plan to buy.
5. Dump height. How high it can unload. Easy to overlook until you’re trying to load a truck and come up short. If you load anything tall, check this before you buy.
6. Overall width. The most underrated spec for tight access. If it doesn’t fit through the gate, none of the other numbers matter. Measure your tightest access point and compare honestly, and look for retractable tracks if access is your main challenge.
