Most forklift buyers research lifting capacity and maximum lift height before anything else.
The free lift specification rarely comes up until someone buys the wrong machine for a low ceiling facility and discovers the problem on day one.
What it actually describes
Every forklift mast has two distinct lift phases.
Free lift — forks rise while the mast stays at its collapsed height. Overall machine height stays constant throughout this phase.
Mast extension — mast telescopes upward and overall machine height increases with every inch of additional lift.
In a facility with low ceilings, overhead pipes, sprinkler systems, lighting fixtures, or structural beams — a machine with limited free lift starts extending the mast early and contacts obstructions before the forks reach working height.
A machine with generous free lift raises the forks significantly before the mast begins to extend — giving low ceiling facilities the clearance they need throughout the lift cycle.
The TYPHON VIGOR 3 specifies 1,400mm of free lift specifically for this reason.
The practical check
Measure the lowest ceiling height in every area the forklift will operate — not just the open floor area. Receiving corridors, mezzanine sections, dock door headers, and storage aisles often have significantly lower clearance than the main floor.
The free lift specification needs to exceed the lift height required in the lowest clearance area of the facility.
One measurement before purchase. Saves a significant problem after delivery.
The lifting capacity gets the attention in most buying conversations. The free lift specification gets the headaches when it is wrong.
